Ollie is a handsome, two year old Havanese that weighs only twelve pounds. He arrived at The Fort super early Tuesday morning and joined our Small Dog Program, with curiosity. He wandered his way around the play area and showed great Dog Speak!
This little cutie was today's assessment! Winnie is a ten pound, nine month old Miniature Dachshund! She had a fun time scoping out all our cool toys up in our Small Dog Program today. It was super cute to watch her get all giddy and silly as she wiggled around and played with some balls. I can tell that she's going to blossom the more times she comes here!
Katrina came to Fort Fido yesterday for her Assessment. She is a lovely, five year old, fourteen pound, black and tan colored, Miniature Dachshund. Katrina enjoyed her time spent in The Fort's "Little Roll" Play Area. In there, she scampered around without a care, and got along well with the pack. Katrina is a mature canine, that has obviously been around other dogs many times before. Here, she didn't plan too much, but we believe that she could play more here in time. All in all, Katrina, is most welcome to hang here at Fort Fido. Nicely done!
Bright and early this morn, The Fort Fido gang met up with, Zuko, for his assessment. He came in chipper, ready to explore and meet some dogs! As we headed upstairs to the Little Roll, Zuko seemed eager to have a good time. A five year old, ten pound, Miniature Pinscher and Miniature Dachshund Mix, Zuko, is very cute and displays a joyful disposition. After getting his bearings, it was time to meet the pack, and Zuko did so with ease. Meeting and greeting, Zuko entertained himself by scampering about, socializing with the other pack members, and checking out the toys a bit. Although Zuko didn't get into much dyadic (one on one) play, his actions suggested he was having a great time. His body stayed fluid, and his tailed wagged often while staying with us today at The Fort. Zuko is welcome anytime, and we shall be getting to know him more... We will not be surprised at all, if he busts out into some more play soon.

A bit ago I mentioned new dogs Winston and his brother Walter. They were supposed to assess on the same day, but Walter was a bit under the weather when Assessment Day arrived. Since then, Winston has been having a really good time at Fort Fido and is doing well... While Walter, is finally back to 100% good health, and was ready to go for his assessment this morning. A three year old, twenty-three pound, Miniature Dachshund Mix, Walter, naturally tried out The Fort's Little Roll upstairs. There, he sniffed about, exploring the play area curiously. As other dogs were introduced to him, Walter met with them in the proper manner, cautiously going through the motions of canine greeting. As the pack grew, Walter stayed cool, calm, and collected. Although he didn't play too much, Walter did enjoy hanging out with the other dogs, and seemed comfortable. Given a bit of time and consistency, we wouldn't be surprised at all if Walter starts in on some more play. His bro Winston has proved to be quite the player, so Walter may get there too. Good job today Wally, we shall see you around.
Today we assessed the fun-loving Kona here at The Fort. He is a curious, ten month old, eleven pound, Shih Tzu and Miniature DachshundMix. After entering the Little Roll solo, Kona quickly explored his new found territory. With his nose to the ground and his tail wagging excitedly, he checked out our play-toys and all four corners of the play area.
Kona was quite intrigued to meet other canines. Once they arrived on the scene, Kona greeted them, communicating fairly well for a young canine, albeit rambunctiously lol... Because he is an adolescent dog, Kona, is still learning how to meet, greet, and communicate properly. As the little-dog-pack grew in size, Kona bounced and fluttered from dog to dog, attempting to engage in play. Although he never did end up doing much one on one play, he did burn off some energy by socializing a lot. Kona is welcome to attend Fort Fido. We believe he will become even more comfortable here, and possibly engage in that dyadic (one on one) play, in a future visit. Good work this morning Kona!
Get a load of this good-looking fella, Marty, that we assessed today. He is a chipper, ten year old, eighteen pound, red colored, Standard Dachshund. Marty breezed into Fort Fido this morning, upbeat and without a care. Even before getting upstairs to the Little Roll, he was happily sniffing about and wagging his tail. Once in the play area, Marty continued to explore his surroundings. Straight from the get go, he seemed pretty content with his new digs. As time went on and other canines arrived, Marty acted as if he'd already been hanging out with them lol. He wasn't overly concerned with playing or interacting much, yet he was social enough to stay calm and balanced around the group. It's not Marty's "first time at the rodeo" so to speak. He looks and acts quite spry for the mature, ten years old, that he is. He did well amongst the high-energy youngins', that make up the majority of the Little Roll's pack. Marty is welcome to attend The Fort whenever he'd like. Swell job my man, see ya soon!
We were certainly "busy beavers" this morning... Fort Fido welcomed three newcomers in for their assessments!
Get to know the mini-pack that is Maye Maye, Milo, and Otis.
Maye Maye is a six year old, twenty pound, beige and white colored, Lhasa Apso/Cocker Spaniel Mix. She did well upstairs, in the Little Roll, and seemed to dig the experience. Maye Maye's a smart canine that reminds us a bit of Fort regular, Mimi.
Milo is a five year old, twenty-five pound, brindle marked, Dachshund Mix. He's a sharp looking dog that also did a good job here today, with his "sister" Maye Maye, in the Little Roll. Milo was very watchful over his "mini-pack" members. He too, enjoyed his stay.
Last but certainly not least, was Otis. He is a five year old, thirty-two pound, beige colored, Pomeranian Mix. Now Otis seemed to have the most "big brother" energy, out of the trio. He watched over his "siblings", as a big brother traditionally would. He socialized well, and was quite eager to meet with incoming pack members. Although none of the three dogs played too much, as it can be a lot to take in on a first day... Otis, was definitely the most active. He frolicked and meandered about the Little Roll play area in high spirits.
Maye Maye, Milo, and Otis are welcome to come back to Fort Fido anytime. We plan on meeting with them again soon.

With the cold and stormy weather we've been having around here lately, some dogs really enjoy a little extra "warmth" around them. Sure, you could always purchase a dog sweater, or four little waterproof booties, but why not make them yourself? If you are feeling ambitious, and or know anything about sewing stuff. Checkout this really fun Youtube tutorial I found awhile back. "Steve The Daschund" has a really cool owner that whips him up a homemade dog sweater, and some DIY booties. Too cool, check it out even if you aren't gonna make anything, it's just cute lol.
Two years later, he's still rocking the well-made sweater.
It sure is amazing what crafty-folk can do. It's also wonderful when they take the time, to share their efforts with the world online.
Decked out from head to toe in Pink, Zoe, was here today for her assessment. She is a sweet little, six year old, seventeen pound, dilute red colored, Miniature Dachshund. Zoe did well in our Little Roll and it was apparent that she had been around dogs before. Although she didn't venture into play, she seemed fairly comfortable during her stay and explored her play group a bit. Zoe is a very gentle and kind canine that Fort Fido looks forward to having in again. Excellent job today Zoe, we'll see you in a couple of weeks.

One from Diego. He is looking as sharp as ever posin' in front of the tree. Note that he is sporting some holiday accessories. So Vogue lol!
The other is from Main Man Miller. I think this one is spectacular, the card is an ornament that you can actually hangup. Miller is a natural dog-model putting on his best "Blue Steel" for this winter warming pic.
Our fourth assessment this week (Wow, busy busy!) was the super-cute Stuart. He is a four year old, twelve pound, IsabellaDachshund (a rare coloring). Stuart Little is currenty being fostered in a very loving home filled with great pups. Miller and Paisley are Stuart's new foster siblings, he couldn't ask for a better setup. This morning, we took Stuart upstairs to the Little Roll. He wasn't quite sure what to make of all the action yet had definitely been around dogs before. Stuart didn't play a whole heck of a lot but he interacted some and spoke decent "Dog Language". He had no problem telling rowdy youngins to give him some space... In a good way, meaning, he wasn't too harsh and exhibited good bite control. We believe this has been a good experience for Stuart and he may attend whenever he likes. His foster parents and future new parents can be comfortable knowing he is ok with little dogs off-leash. This is definitely a plus. There's no doubt in our minds that this pooch will find a warm/loving permanent home in a short amount of time. Even if it takes awhile, it won't matter, he'll be hard-pressed to find a better gig then the one he has now. :)
Now for some unfortunate news... Lucas and Harriet have been attending Fort Fido weekly for five years, let's just say, we know them well. They both just recently crossed the Rainbow Bridge after very long, healthy and active lives.
:( We are saddened by this news yet find feelings of happiness when we reflect on their lives. These two pooches were always up to something, many of their antics were quite comical. They were the old timers of the Big Roll but could handle any wiseguy or naive whippersnapper that came there way lol. In short, they were great dogs and we really enjoyed them.
Lucas and Harriet's owners are some of the best people you could find. They've loved these two dogs for years and have always took the very best care of them. They have also been extremely supportive of Fort Fido, even in our humble beginnings... Recommending us to several of their friends and associates. For this, we thank them wholeheartedly and apologize for their loss. Lucas, happened to be the oldest Bernese Mountain Dog that his Veterinarian had ever seen, twelve years old! How's that for awesome?
Buster and Smokey are two litter mates that assessed this morning. Checkout these two cuties... Buster and Smokey are five month old, seven pound, Male, Wire haired Miniature Dachshunds. Buster was a bit more adventurous then his brother Smokey. Both dogs explored their environment and did fine for their first day at The Fort. They will become two great additions to the Little Roll upstairs.
Mr. Miller just turned one on Tuesday 8/17/10! He is one lucky guy, his parents made him a special dinner and took him out to his favorite store to get a new toy. The Fort gave him a stuffed birthday cake. Happy Birthday Miller, may you have many more great birthdays in the years to come.
Elphie had her assessment this morning. She is a one year old, 12 pound, Dachshund mix. Elphie is a wonderful little dog that did super upstairs in the little roll. She has been to daycare before so she's already all about it. Elphie made friends instantly, her favortie pal was Fendi. Score!

:( Sad day. One of Fort Fido's friends Coco passed away this weekend. Our sincerest apologies go out to his family. You can see a little clip of Coco and his old Mini Dachshund buddies here.
Coco's owner Marie sent us some cute and funny photos of Coco yesterday. I thought I'd post them up here for all to see. Coco has a lot of fun here at the fort. He is a chocolate Miniature Dachshund, about 12 pounds and almost two years old.
This funny little clip was taken yesterday. It shows three of our many Miniature Dachshunds, more commonly referred to as "Wiener Dogs" lol. First Miller, the fawn colored, waddles off. Not too far behind him Coco, a chocolate colored guy, heads the same way... Followed by Dixie who is a black and tan little gal. We are fortunate to have so many mini dachshunds at Fort Fido. In our expierenece they make delightful daycare dogs, even if they can get a bit too rowdy at times. :)
