Mickey, is a handsome, six year old, thirty-five pound, Tri-Colored, Shetland Sheepdog. Mickey tried our Medium Roll on for size and thrived. This high-energy herding dog, had a surprisingly calm and balanced disposition, Gibson, you should really start taking cues from Mickey haha!
Anyway, Mickey, unfortunately didn't engage in any lively play, however he did interact with the pack flawlessly. His canine communication skills are outstanding! He had no signs of stress in his stay and just sort of took it all in. With regular attendance, we believe Mickey will begin to really enjoy Dog Daycare. He is currently in a transitional period of life, with different things to digest and adjust to. Luckily, canines are quite adaptable, and Mickey seems to be no exception. He is an absolutely gorgeous specimen, that we look forward to having here at Fort Fido.

This is definitely not for everyone... I'm neutral on the idea of it all (feel free to ask me in person why lol). It does give me a chuckle though! However, I will not be turning Gibby into an Armadillo anytime soon, hahaha!

A widely debated topic about dogs/dog training is whether or not to let your dog sleep on your bed with you.
Here at Fort Fido, we tell folks, simply, "Don't do it!". It has the potential of opening a whole can of worms.
Many folks do let there pooch on the bed and I understand it fully, the kid in me does as well... Let's face it, it's fun to get cozy and cuddle with your pet who is obviously a loving member of the family (pack). Yet, multiple problems can arise from allowing your fuzzy buddy to snooze with you.
For us, it isn't about hygiene or allergies, although, after reading several articles, that could be a problem for some. Nobody wants to get sick, albeit, I think that's rare. Our problem is when folks let their dog "Rule the bed" (or other furniture).
Letting the dog decide when and where they can sleep is the issue. Over the years we've heard several horror stories of dogs growling/snapping at their owners/owners guests when they attempt to remove the dog from the bed or off of the furniture. Now that is a major problem! We here at The Fort strongly believe in being the leader of our pack/dog(s) and making the decisions. When people begin to let their pet decide things (like being on the bed whenever the y please), it can become a roller-coaster of disaster, with many behavioral problems surfacing, due to seemingly harmless and unconscious actions.
Don't want to beat a dead horse here lol. I think most everyone grasps what I'm saying. However, apparently, many pet behaviorists and scientist have debunked the whole "Be the pack leader" style of training. Who knows, we only know what works for us and plenty of others... Ever heard of Cesar Millan? Hahaha, not many can debate him and we certainly wouldn't. Maybe a happy medium is in order? Here is an example, truthfully, it's exactly what I do and what works for my "Pack Family".
Gibson is allowed on the bed when we want him to be on the bed, simple! First and foremost, we choose the time, then call him up... Our bed is pretty high but he must jump up to be in it. Nobody is going to pick him up and set him in lol. After that, he may cuddle with us in the bed until we are ready to fall asleep. This is the part that's no fun haha... We get up and put him in his crate (that is next to the bed, on the ground) for the night. This works because my wife and I decide, Gibby doesn't have carte blanche, problems don't arise.
We use the "No free lunch" and "You don't decide" methods exclusively. Believe me, my dog and I still have our quirks and issues but for the most part, things are wonderful when we stick to these practices. One thing I can attest to, is that Gibson has absolutely no Separation Anxiety. I was adamant in enacting a plan that would prevent that common and darn right annoying behavioral problem. It's the scourge of many a dog and human relationship. Too many owners out there send mix messages to their pets. Before they know it, the animals believes they are on the same level as them and become ready to make "doggy decisions". Not good!

The first of the month around here at Fort Fido can be a very busy time for us. Most folks pay and or bring in their schedules around this time. It is also a time where we have a good amount of busy "office work". We go through our database and determine which dogs are members in good standing (aka they have attended The Fort at least once in 90 days), which dogs are due for shots/fecal tests, who gets put on the dreaded "Black List" (don't worry it's not as scary as it sounds), whose paperwork gets shredded (because they no longer attend) and who gets mailed a "We haven't seen you in awhile!" coupon.
In short, we dot our I's, cross our T's, spruce the place up and get organized! It does take some effort and can be a bit challenging but it really helps us run smoothly. Please bare with us if we have to communicate with you about anything mentioned above. Nobody is in trouble lol and everyone is welcome. As a business, we just have to have our policies in place to continue giving you great customers and your wonderful pets our best! So with that said, get out your planners and setup your daycare schedule! After-all, it is the first of the month! ;)
This week looks like it's going to be summer folks, enjoy! Get out there and have some fun. If for some unfortunate reason your pup can't join you, drop them off here for some summer fun with the pack.
Abby and Stella are two frequent visitors of The Fort. They are best buddies, knowing how to play hard and fast... Sometimes we have to step in and slow them down a bit ;) . These two swell dogs deffinitely get in a full-body workout everyday they are here.
Two young shepherds, Jake and Ziva, had a bit of a love-affair today. It's neat to see the two playing together. Osbourne ends this one with a wind-sprint lol.

Meanwhile... Emily, Gibson and Jaeger were a surprising trio that got along well.
Yesterday I received this flyer from the US Postal Service in the mail. I'm certain that many of you have already seen it but I thought I'd post it up anyway. It's interesting... I guess the "Mailman getting bit by a dog" isn't such an old wives' tale after all. Maybe I'm the only one that got it? Gibby is pretty scary! Hahaha!
