Awesome Animals!

I always love it when summer comes around-- not only is the weather fantastic, there are also some cool county fairs and contests, including the World's Ugliest Dog competition! This lighthearted contest encourages us to laugh with the less classically beautiful among us. This year's winner is a Boxer/Beagle/Basset mix named Walle. Judges were quoted as saying "he looked like an experiment gone wrong!" Walle and his owner won a $1500 prize, as well as a professional photo shoot and catered dinner for the both of them!

This isn't exactly dog-related, but I came across it today and just had to share. Check out this sweet guinea pig armor (yes, you read that right, haha ).

I'm gonna keep spreading the blog love to other parts of the animal kingdom-- I spotted this story today about a gal with a pet Capybara (kind of like a 112-pound guinea pig). The world's largest rodent isn't exactly a pet many would choose, but for Melanie Typaldos it was the only choice. Her cool companion Gary is very smart and affectionate, and knows quite a few tricks!

This pup has a cool summer pastime-- kayaking with his owner! Check out the full story here.

Man's best friend comes to the rescue again-- this time in Tennessee. A man was trapped in a dry creek bed and unable to cry for help. Luckily his loyal pup Jinxie raised a ruckus for him and notified rescuers that were searching for the missing man.

Keep cool everybody!

Some great news stories

Sometimes life can take us to the most unexpected places. That is what happened when little Hoppy the Pappillon found his way from a puppy mill, where cramped conditions crippled him, to being a member of a performing pack with a caring owner.

Another pup, Francis, was found in a cardboard box in the freezing rain. Thanks to the patience and constant care of volunteers, he is now on the rebound. He is also in a contest to win ten thousand dollars for the shelter that brought him back from the brink. Way to give back!

The ASPCA is launching a new campaign against puppy mills this month. The "No Pet Store Puppies" campaign aims to eliminate puppy mills by encouraging people to get their pups from legitimate breeders or shelters. If there is no demand for puppy mill pups, then the mills will all go out of business. There will be no more money in those puppies, if consumers buy responsibly.

In overseas news, authorities seized around 1000 dogs in Thailand, as part of a bust on dog smuggling. Sadly, around 300 of the pups were already too sickly to save and died in transit. But the smuggling ring is gone, and the remaining pups were all taken to shelters.

Sorry about the lateness of the post--I've been wrestling with this computer all day!

A few articles plus a clip

I found some neat articles today--one about some amazing "doggie dye jobs" at Ruowen Pet Spain Beijing.

The latest Iphone app for dog lovers is "DogBeMine". It contains extensive information about different dog breeds to help prospective owners choose a pet, and training tips for those who already have one!

This is not the happiest news article, but Natural Balance has had to recall some of their Sweet Potato & Chicken Dry Dog Food because of a contamination with Salmonella.

The Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital in Tacoma is having their annual Met Vet Pet Health Fair (try to say that three times fast!). From 10am-2pm, there will be information booths about healthcare for pets, and several adoption agencies will also be present. This event is also a fundraiser for Animal Food Bank assistance programs for seniors with pets.

If you know of anyone who has lost a pet this year, the Missing Pet Partnership will be having a three-day seminar on techniques for finding lost pets. On the 4th of July weekend, anyone who has lost a pet is encouraged to go the the Kent animal shelter for assistance (they have an 80% recovery rate!).

Here's a clip from the Fort today-- Louis had a heck of a time trying to figure out how to get the ball out of the other ball! The big blue ball has some big cutouts on it so that the dogs can see that there's another ball inside of it, and Louis loved the brainteaser!
