Jake & Geoffrey

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of meeting Jake. He is a six-year-old, eighty-five-pound, Golden Retriever. Jake "spoke" good dog and enjoyed hanging out with the dogs in our Large Dog Program. He had a blast playing with the Great Pyrenees brothers Moose and Yammo. Jake is welcome to come back anytime.

Geoffrey came into the Fort for his assessment this morning. He is a nine-month-old, twenty-six-pound, Terrier mix. Geoffrey joined our Medium Dog Program where he spent most of the morning playing with his new friend Berkeley. Good job today, Geoffrey!

Jake and Geoffrey are both welcome back anytime. We look forward to seeing them again soon!

Sarge

Sarge was our handsome assessment from Tuesday morning. He's three years old, weighs one-hundred and ten pounds, and is a St. Bernard/Great Pyrenees mix. He seemed a little unsure at times- but majority of the morning he was mingling with the dogs and enjoyed exploring our Large Dog Program.
We were even lucky enough to catch him in action... 

We are looking forward to seeing Sarge's smiling face around The Fort more often. Have a marvelous night,

Danee and Phoebe

Danee was our adorable assessment from Tuesday... This girl weighs twenty pounds, is only six months old, and is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Danee joined our Small Dog Program
with great curiosity- the moment she entered her new play area. Her sniffer was on overdrive mode as she started meeting her new daycare buddies; showing wonderful dog speak as she did it.

Phoebe was our other cutie-pie that joined our Small Dog Program; the only difference was she did her assessment today, vs. yesterday... Phoebe is twelve years old, weighs eleven pounds and is a Maltese. This girl was quite the ladies man. Her first friend that she made was Archie; those two played like there was no tomorrow! After she was done hanging out with Archie, she moved to our bench where she met our stud, Tobi. They hung out together until her assessment was over.

Both dogs are more than welcome to return for more Fort Fido fun!

10 Cool Dog Facts

Dogs are certainly fascinating creatures. They come in all shapes and sizes; you'll come across many different personalities and characteristics within the canine species...

Check out some of these interesting and far-out fun facts about dogs. 

1. The Newfoundland has a water resistant coat and webbed feet. They were originally bred to help haul nets for fisherman and rescuing drowning people. How cool!

2. Did you know there was only three "dog survivors" from The Titanic?? 

3. Rumor has it that The Beatles', Paul McCartney, recorded an ultrasonic whistle (only audible to dogs) at the end of one of his songs "A Day in the Life". That's how much he loved his Shetland Sheepdog!

4. Puppies have 28 teeth and normal adult dogs have 42!

5. Dogs do dream! It turns out they go through the same sleeping cycles that we do: slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM).

6. 72% of dog owners believe their dog can detect when stormy weather is on its way... 

7. Why are dog noses so wet?! The answer is simple. Dogs secrete a thin layer of mucus that allows them to pick up smell better; they then lick their nose to sample the scent through their mouth. 

8. Dogs have about 1,700 taste buds. Humans have approximately 9,000 and cats have around 473.

9. It's a myth that dogs can only see black and white. They actually view The World in more of a "faded" way... Check out the photo to our left! That's typically what life would look like, if you were a dog. they see primarily blue, greenish-yellow and various shades of yellow and gray. 

10. Have you ever wondered why dogs kick after they go to the bathroom? They are using their scent glands in their paws to further mark "their territory". Now you know!

I hope you learned some new fun-facts after reading this blog... Who would have thought that the reason dogs noses are wet- is to help with picking up smell; that one surprised me a bit.

Sprinkles & Kona

Sprinkles came into the Fort for her assessment this morning. She is a nine-month-old, thirty-seven-pound, Charcoal Labrador Retriever. Sprinkles "spoke" very good dog, and enjoyed playing with all of her new friends in our Medium Dog Program. Her new best friend, Arya, is a three-month-old Husky puppy. The two of them played the entire morning. Sprinkles did a great job and is welcome back anytime. We look forward to seeing her again soon.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of meeting Kona. He is an eleven-year-old, ninety-pound, Black Labrador Retriever. He joined our Large Dog Program, where he spent the morning socializing with the other dogs. He had a good first day and we hope to see him again soon!

Arya

Arya was our adorable assessment from today... This sweetie-pie is a twenty pound Husky, that's only three months old! She joined our Medium Dog Program
with lots of curiosity and personality. She made numerous amounts of friends and took a particular liking to Dutch and Louis! Feel free to watch them play in this goofy video below...

Eventually Arya will join the bigger pups in our Large Dog Program- once her energy level rises, and she grows a bit.

Dogs and Rain!

We've been getting a lot of rain lately. I was inspired to see if I could find some silly clips of dogs enjoying, and romping around in it... Watch the videos below, to see what I mean!
